In Memory

Mary Holdt (Schudel)

Mary L. Schudel, 59, of Lincoln, died peacefully at her home and entered her heavenly dwelling on Friday, November 8, 2013. Mary was born in Grand Island, Neb. on June 10, 1954, the daughter of Leland and Mary Ellen Holdt. She spent her early childhood years in Kearney, moving to Lincoln with her family in 1961. Mary graduated from Lincoln East High School in 1972 and received her B.A. degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1976. She married Paul M. Schudel in 1980 and they were blessed with two children, Michael and Meg.

Mary loved being a mom. She dedicated herself to raising Michael and Meg and enjoyed teaching them and molding their characters at every age of their lives. She loved the family's trips to Rocky Mountain National Park as well as the many other family trips to many other parts of the world.

Mary returned to college in 1999, attending Concordia University - Nebraska, and completing here colloquy to qualify to become a teacher in Lutheran schools. In 1999 she joined the faculty of Lincoln Lutheran Middle/Senior High School and continued to teach there for seven years, retiring in 2007. Mary counted those years of teaching English, Church History, Religion, Geography and other courses among the happiest in her life. She had a gift for teaching and was nominated for and received The Golden Apple Award twice in her short career, but she cherished cards, photo collages and keepsakes from her students and faculty colleagues far more than these awards.

Mary is reunited in heaven with her parents, Leland and Mary Ellen Holdt. She is survived by her loving husband, Paul; her children, Michael Schudel (and his wife, Shannon); and Meg Higgins (and her husband, Jordan); her sister, Candy Kohnke; and her brother, Mark Holdt; as well as other beloved family members.
