
Janis E. Jacobs, 51, State College, Pa., died Sept. 16, 2005, at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Born, Lincoln (3/26/54), the daughter of Norvel L. and Jean Jacobs. On May 24, 1980, she married D. Wayne Osgood. She graduated from Lincoln East High School and earned her bachelor's degree in human development and family studies from Colorado State University, and her master's and doctor of philosophy from the University of Michigan in the combined program in education and psychology. Her career was devoted to university administration, teaching and to research on child and adolescent development. From 1986 through 1996, she was a faculty member in psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she also served as chair of the psychology department and took a leading role on a variety of university initiatives.
She moved to Pennsylvania State University in 1996 as a faculty member in human development and family studies and psychology, and from 1999 to the present has occupied prominent administrative positions, including vice president for administration and vice president and dean for undergraduate education. She served on a wide range of boards and commissions for her universities, professional associations and several national groups.
In addition to her husband Wayne, Janis is survived by her daughter, Logan J. Osgood-Jacobs, her parents, Norvel and Jean Jacobs, Lincoln, and her brother, the Rev. Mark L. Jacobs and his wife, the Rev. Joann Jacobs, Charlotte, Mich.
